What's Sun Monitor?

Sun Monitor is a solar panel management system. It includes customized plug&play devices which we install in users' home and a cloud based server. We use raspberry pi as our plug&play device, it's very small and energy efficient. This device will overlay solar power output and system status to our server for users to use.

Winner of EAA2013

Ericsson Application Awards a.k.a EAA is an annual, global competition for application developers on the Android platform. This year(2013) there're 195 team signed up and more than 90 teams submit their works. After two months evaluation and end user tests, Sun Monitor were selected as the winner of EAA 2013 in student category.

Following is a Portuguese local news before we won the EAA2013.

Prototype demonstration

Our sun-monitor prototype was installed in a Green building in southern part of Taiwan. With 110 solar panels (covers 254.1 square meters) on the top of the roof, the building can potentially generate 25.3 kilowatt hour of electricity. The solar power system of the house costs around €72k in 2010 when it was deployed. As government incentives, the power it generates (around 33,000 kilowatt hour in a year) was and will be sold to Electricity Company in Taiwan with triple of the regular electricity price. As the development of solar power technology, more and more house owners in Taiwan are going to have solar panel deployed on their roofs. Our sun-monitor prototype greatly simplified the process of monitoring solar power output and also reduces the energy cost of it.

Except for the using solar power, the building also benefits from many environment friendly designs. For example, they use the water that collected by rainwater recycle system to water the plants in the garden. Windows and fans were installed in a delicate way together that they can increase air flow in the summer so that can keep the house cool without the use of air conditioner. In the morning, sun shine can reach inside of the building through four large east facing windows and hollow ceiling so that they can have sufficient brightness in the house without using the lights. We’re very happy that our prototype can be a part of this green building and help its owner maintain their solar power system.
